Working Backwards

When setting goals, use motivation as your metric. And, work backwards.

As you begin a new season, no matter your sport, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss the concept of starting with the END in mind. Or, working backwards.

What are your goals for the season, personally? Where do you want to be once the season ends with regards to your statistics, fitness, and attitude? Once you can determine these goals (and you need to be specific about them…) in each area, work your way backwards. Set benchmark dates along the way where you will check in on each goal. (A great way to do this is through our working together, by the way, so that you have an accountability partner that can assist you in setting/resetting and achieving your goals!). Determine what PROCESS goals (actions that are under your control) you need to set to achieve your season goals, also.

The process is simple, but you have to start with the end in mind, and you need to have a crystal-clear picture in your head of what you want to achieve. This picture (goal) will “pull you along” during the season, no matter the ups and downs or the team dynamics, and will keep your motivation steady. Injuries, playing time, adversity, CoVid, isolation-nothing will be able to fully interrupt you on your path to achieving your goals.

Set your end goals for this coming season, and start working backwards. If you want some help along the way, I’m happy to assist.
